Updates on Sleepless Musical Discovery

Recently, for reasons that you need not know of, I ain’t sleeping so good. It’s 5:45am here and I should really be snoozing in preparation for finishing a presentation tomorrow for university.

My cure for insomnia is almost always 3 or 4 songs from a Bon Iver record. They get me relaxed and stops me from thinking about stuff too much. This recent re-discovery of Bon Iver has made me look at MORE of Justin Vernon’s material. This reluctantly includes his recent collaboration on Kanye West’s new album, ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’.

I’m normally quite open minded to rap music nowadays. I quite like Eminem’s new album, Jay-Z doesn’t talk about “GuNz, HoEZ/BitcHez and Weed” enough to get me annoyed as the genre stereotype would suggest; so where previously I would not seek out West’s new album I actually want to sample it to form a few opinions about it. However, as he is considered a bit of an ‘icon’ in the West, Kanye has gotten a little drunk from his own fame (see what I did there?) and has looked like a royal arse of late in my own book.

First Opinions:

  • It’s not too bad. While I may not particularly like his character, Kanye West has always made his music relevant and tasteful.
  • The song ‘All Of The Lights’ is a very good song for it’s hook and general production. A song I can see making it’s way up my Last.fm charts quite quickly.
  • The collaboration with Bon Iver is a bit mediocre. Nothing particularly awesome comes from the two songs he is featured. Still good to see the name on such a mainstream album.

A full review will follow at some point. Very busy at the moment.
