Deftones release 6th studio album, “Diamond Eyes”.
I am the first one to admit that I am no real devotee to the metal genre of music. This is based on the view that there is a large amount of talentless performers that manage to make it big in this musical field, distorting the view of the better bands that actually make good music that I never get to sample.
Though, one band that has no problem showing their talent to me is the Deftones. Responsible for one of the most memorable guitar riffs of the century that gets everyone screaming in a live performance from the song “My Own Summer”, instantly familiar even if you don’t recognise the name of the song.
After 2006’s personally disappointing record “Saturday Night Wrist”, the band have returned this month with “Diamond Eyes”.
My first reaction to the album was that it sounded very reminiscent of the album that put them in the big-time, “Around The Fur”. This recent video interview explains how the two records are similar to one another in the perspective of the recording process of the two.
I would recommend listening to the title track “Diamond Eyes”, which similar to “My Own Summer”, immediately gets the listener familiar to the heavy sound of guitarist Stef Carpenter’s. Secondly, I am liking the more melodic, mellow feel to the song “Beauty School”.
Overall, I can’t really knock it. This album feels complete. All of the tracks sound comfortable after one another; something that I would criticise 2006’s “Saturday Night Wrist” for not doing well, which is made especially difficult with how original Deftones’ music is.
If you only have ever liked one Deftones song, I always believe its always worth checking out what their new material sounds like because when you do find it good, it can take up a lot of your listening time. In the case of “Diamond Eyes”, I would have to say it is having that event on me.
